The letters are made of potatoes, plexiglas, aluminum, foam and squash, among other things, and there is no computer animation involved. Very impressive.

It's always exciting to see the entries for each book as they roll in, and many of North Light's most popular authors were discovered in Splash (Soon Y. Warren, author of Painting Vibrant Watercolors: Discover the Magic of Light, Color and Contrast, comes to mind).

North Light's guru of things Splash-related is Sarah Laichas. Sarah recently drew on the talents of our ArtistsNetwork.tv crew to tell you all about the next Splash competition, Splash 12: The Best of Watercolor: Celebrating Artistic Vision. Watch the video below—and you'll learn the name of the artist who painted the cover of Splash 11, in stores next summer!

Last month Chris Saper, well known for her vibrant heirloom and corporate portraits, flew into Cincinnati in order to film two ArtistsNetwork.TV videos. It was lovely to meet her and mesmerizing to watch her as she gave two distinct lessons in painting from life. For the first video, she restricted her palette to black, white, and gray; the resulting grisaille portrait is breathtaking. For the second video, filmed right after, the indefatigable Chris worked with a different model and a full palette. Throughout both videos, Chris dispenses specific lessons and helpful tips in achieving a likeness and painting skin tones in oil. On screen and in life, she is a wonderfully companionable presence; she makes learning fun. Eric Camper, director of ArtistsNetwork.TV, and I certainly enjoyed being with her; I predict you will, too. Check out these two previews.

In his blog, Lou Romano talks about the art production of the new Pixar movie Up:

Similar to the work from The Incredibles, (production paintings, color/lighting design and artistic direction) this was done to help inspire the look of the film.

Every show is a major collaboration requiring the talents of many. The artists who helped define the look of UP included: Bryn Imagire (Shading Art Director) Daniel Lopez Munoz, Albert Lozano (Character Designers) Greg Dykstra (Character Design Sculptor) Don Shank, Nat McLaughlin, Noah Klocek, Daniel Arriaga (Environmental Designers) and Paul Conrad (Graphic Designer).

Despite many challenges, these artists were always focused on what was really important...the art.

I absolutely must see "Herb and Dorothy," a new documentary about a couple that has amassed one of the best private collections of contemporary art, and all on a working person's wages. (Their criteria for buying art are that the work has to be affordable, it has to fit in their one-bedroom apartment, and they have to just like it.) We're sending the July issue of The Artist's Magazine to the press this week, and one of the artists in the issue is George Tooker, an egg tempera painter and Magical Realist. (The issue goes on sale June 6.)

The Columbus (Ohio) Museum of Art is showing a retrospective on Tooker starting May 1 through Sept. 6. The CMA also released a mini-documentary about the artist. You can watch the first part below and see the rest on the CMA's YouTube page.
